Map Functionality

The System provides excellent Map Navigation from the Toolbar. Simply Zoom-In or Zoom-Out at will, Pan sideways or Return to Full-Extent or Previous Zoom dimension. Click here to see more details about the Map Navigation Toolbar.

The System provides the ability for the User to Select a Species of Bird from Southern Africa by Setting the Family-Dropdown to a Family of Birds (such as Owls) and then selecting the individual Species from the Species-Dropdown below it. By pressing the "Display" button, the system displays information about that species and allows the User to start Recording their own data or Analysing other Users data with respect to that species.

Data-Capturing Tools are also available where the User can Add a record, fill out the information relating to that record (such as Sight-Date, Sight-Time, No-of-Individuals, Plumage, Behaviour and Additional Comments (and even attach a Photograph to that Record)) and then Submit the record to the database. This record will then be available to anyone else to see who Logs-In and enters the System.
However, the User entering the record also has the ability to deny other users from seeing that record (if the sighting is Sensitive, such as a Nest-Sight) by setting the Sensitive-dropdown to "Yes". To ensure accuracy of records submitted, the System will not allow records to be entered if the User has not Zoomed-In to at least 1:300,000 on the ScaleBar.
The User can also use the "Identify" button to click on a Sighting Dot on the Map and the System will display the attributes (and photo if one was attached) that were captured by the User who captured that record. The Record will also display a Unique Sighting-Code that can be used to determine records from each other.

Additional Functionality

There are 3 extra functionality pages.

1) The Bird Species Analyser
Select from the 5 drop-down boxes the combination of criteria you would like to filter from the 950 or so species recorded in the Southern Africa sub-region. For example, setting the ResidentStatus-Dropdown to "Resident" and the EndemicStatus-Dropdown to "Endemic" will filter out the birds found in Southern Africa that meet these criteria (approx 100). Further refining this process by perhaps setting the RarityStatus-Dropdown to "Uncommon" will filter all the birds meeting this new criteria as well (approx 14).

2) Recent Recordings Analyser
Select from the Main drop-down box the Species or Category-of-Species that you wish to see recent recordings for. Select from the Date drop-down box the number of days you wish to return Recordings from. The results show the Species, Date-Recorded and Person-Recorded-By.

2) Species Behaviour Analyser
Select from the Species drop-down box the Species that you wish to see results for. The results display the Behaviour-per-Sighting as captured by the users.
